With so many opportunities for action lost and, worse still, so many encouraging movements toward climate action stymied at the national level, imagining a future of flourishing feels deeply challenging. Yet still, in communities throughout this country and around the world, scientists and people of faith, advocates young and old and in between, are making changes that collectively move us toward planetary healing.

In her book What If We Get It Right?: Visions of Climate Futures, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, marine biologist and advocate, interviews a host of people working in many different ways toward a future of collective flourishing, focusing on what is possible even in the darkest times.

The BTS Center explored Dr. Johnson’s text in a five-session book study. Guided by Madeline Bugeau-Heartt and Sue Inches, we explored the many facets of climate resilience presented in the book and brought our own questions, wonderings, and longings into the conversation. Each session featured a dialogical deep dive into the rich content of the text, as well as opportunities for creative and contemplative reflection to pursue the question of how we might transform our own lives as inspired by the questions, textures, and reframings of this work.

Some of the themes explored include:

  • reform vs. transformation
  • the importance of inner, “spiritual” work alongside the necessary “doing,” and
  • the call to action: what are we being asked to do differently and how do we get there?
